The Beloit Community Orchestra and the Beloit High School Orchestra will be in concert at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 2 in the commons of the Beloit Jr.-Sr. High School.
The Beloit Community Orchestra has 65 members who rehearse on selected Sunday afternoons. Impetus for the Orchestra came from the Post Rock University, a free adult education program operated in the Beloit area, and Helen Lukens Hodler. The Orchestra gave its first performance in March 1981 under the direction of Cleo Riley. Michael Harbaugh is the Music Director. The Beloit Community Orchestra is celebrating the 44th Season.
The Community Orchestra will perform “Symphony No. 8 ‘unfinished’ First Movement by Franz Schubert arranged by Richard Meyer; “I’ll Be There For You” (Theme from ‘Friends’); “Final Countdown” by Joey Tempest arranged by Bob Cerulli; “Sakura from ‘Japanese Folksongs’” by Dr. Ken Hakoda; and “Cumberland Cross” by Carl Strommen. Symphony No. 8 will be performed by the combined Beloit Community Orchestra and the Beloit High School Orchestra.
The Beloit High School Orchestra will perform “The Entertainer by Scott Joplin arranged by Steve Olson; “Shady Grove” a traditional Appalachian Folk Song arranged by Renata Bratt featuring soloists Elizabeth Krone and Henry Tice; “Caravan” by Duke Ellington, Irving Mills and Juan Tizol arranged by Lenny Niehaus; and “Sweet Caroline” joined by the Beloit High School Choir arranged by Neil Diamond arranged by John Kinyon. Julia McMains is the Beloit High School Orchestra Director and Gary De Kler is the Beloit High School Choir Director.
The concert is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. A reception will follow the concert in the BJSHS Commons. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of former members Craig Reiter and Andra Lampert.
