Call to artists, groups looking for projects, and cat lovers:

The Pet Connection’s Cattopia, which celebrated its grand opening in 2020, has been three years in the making. Callie the Calico Cat gave The Pet Connection the idea, so it only made sense that she serve on the City Council to oversee the creation of this utopia for cats. She serves alongside Faith, Jimmy, and Betty and they take their jobs very, very seriously, as you can see from the pictures.

As you may already be aware, TPC is committed to raising awareness about animal sheltering and homeless pets in general and Jason and Melody Huff are behavioral consultants with an expertise in shelter pets and pets with behavioral issues. Many cats in Kansas and beyond just cannot be housed in a typical home. Some of those cats are free roaming or feral but may still require some level of care. TPC’s goal with Cattopia was to provide a beautiful, safe place for the cats to live, a space for artists to create and express themselves, and a place for people to come, enjoy, and be inspired.

TPC had so much to do before making Cattopia a reality, the first being to pick a location on the property. The Old Sale Barn turned out to be the perfect spot. According to Melody Huff, Director of The Pet Connection, “This building is being shown a lot of love. It was in disrepair and TPC and volunteers have fixed the roof, replaced the soffits, painted, fixed the windows, and remodeled much of the inside.” It took many, many hours of work to remodel and make the necessary repairs, but Melody says it has been well worth it.

Local artist Waleigh LePon helped develop the “cat city” idea into an artists’ paradise by creating amazing pieces of liveable art for our cat friends, including Cattopia School House, Cat-zebo, and Hotel Kit Kat MIss Kitty’s Saloon. “Wally’s art is spectacular and fun. It’s really an honor that we’re going to have a whole section of his work on our property and we hope that it inspires both artists and non-artists alike,” says Melody.

Over the last two years, Melody has connected with artists, as well as friends and businesses who are involved in various ways with artists, and the positive response has inspired her. “Artists often need an outlet for their work and they can make money on commissioned work. We want to provide an opportunity for them.” Toward that end, TPC recently started collecting the art that will be on display at Cattopia, which will have an area specifically for viewing art and other areas designated for cat-inspired art.

Several artists, including LePon, already have donated items to be on permanent display in the art room. Some have donated artwork to be sold to raise money for the animals that live at The Sanctuary in Beloit. These animals are from various shelters, rescue groups, and municipalities around the Midwest.

If you would like to sponsor artwork, including fabulous structures, at Cattopia, TPC would love your help. If you’re an artist or an organization that wants to put some unique touches on Cattopia, from signage to graffiti to statues, or even an indoor interactive catwalk, or any other interesting ideas, please reach out to Melody at TPC. “I miss the art from the city, so we hope to bring some of that into our little space for people in our community, and beyond, to enjoy and to raise money for our little Sanctuary here. ”

The Pet Connection would like to thank the following people who have been involved in making Cattopia go from a dream to a reality:
Melody Huff, Beloit, Director of The Pet Connection; Jason Huff, Beloit, Director of The Pet Connection; Aaron Cox, Beloit, Volunteer; Jerry Huff, Bushton, Volunteer; Walleigh LePon, Beloit, Artist; Amanda Solt, Beloit, Co- Owner of Finn Kool and Artist; Bob Southard, Overland Park, Owner of Unique Finds, an artists’ collaborative; Joshua Lippold, Mahkando  Lounge and Blue Earth Studios and Gallery, artist/owner; Cats: Callie, Faith, Betty, and Jimmy, members of the Cattopia City Council, responsible for checking out each person, structure, and the box it all came in with amazing oversight.
