Beloit Call earns KPA honors
TOPEKA – The Kansas Press Association has announced that the Beloit Call newspaper will be recognized during the Awards of Excellence banquet at the annual KPA annual convention in March.
In all, the Beloit Call will receive 10 awards, including three first place honors in for all Non-Daily Division 1 entries.
The awards will be presented on Friday, March 20 in Newton in conjunction with the annual conference.
Three first place awards include articles under the headline “Prayers continue for JJ” in the News Story category, “CYT places Beloit on the map” in the Youth Story category, “Airplane” in the photography Feature Photo category, that were taken and written by Beloit Call Editor Sharon Sahlfeld.
Sahlfeld also received four second place honors in the News Story category for an article called “Skaletz shares Holocaust experience”; in the Youth Story category with an article “Budke receives highest Eagle Scout rank”;  in the Best Environmental Story category for an article “Earthquakes shake close to home”; and in the photography Spot News with a photo titled “Graduation emotions”.
In all, Sahlfeld received three third place awards with an Education Story titled “Digital class returns student’s creativity”; in the Health Story category titled “Whitlow retired 45 year nursing career”; and in the photography division Spot News category with a photo titled “Car wreck”.
Sahlfeld has worked in the newspaper industry since 1985 and began her career at the Beloit Call as the sports editor in 2006. She has been the editor since 2015.
“I feel this honor demonstrates how the newspaper connects and is still an important part of the community,” she said. “I love the way the newspaper touches our lives and reminds us of how important our community is. I enjoy serving the informational needs of the community.”
Sahlfeld is the daughter of Judy (Hesket) Bingham of Mankato, and the late Gary Hesket, formerly of Mankato.
Farmers’ markets are growing across the state and continue to be an important source of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and other value added agricultural products from small towns to large metropolitan areas. In 2019, 57 farmers’ markets were registered with the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.

To support Kansas’ farmer’s markets, we are pleased to offer six workshops throughout the state.
