Rays Apple Market
2017 InterHab Outstanding Business Award
Ray’s Apple Market will be receiving the 2017 InterHab Outstanding Business Award for the State of Kansas. Congratulations to Ray’s, Todd Adolph and the staff.
The following was written by OCCK nominating Ray’s for the award:
Ray’s is a modern store with old-fashioned service. (They even carry out your groceries) Besides carrying a full line of groceries, they also run a deli and bakery. Todd Adolf is the store manager and had been the assistant manager at Catlin’s/ Both owners, Ray’s and Catlin’s think it is very important to give to the community and you see that in work they are doing and have done with individuals with disabilities.
The relationship started many years ago with the opportunities for work study for students from the school. It gave students the opportunity to learn new skills and experience the value of employment.
Ray’s Apple Market is one of the local transition council’s community partners. The council promotes education about career awareness and promoting inclusive workplaces and integration.
When the Transition Council started our Disability Mentoring Days, they were one of the first businesses to allow the students to participate. Todd does a great job explaining the employment opportunities in the business and the work skills needed.
The council also hold Transition Fairs bi-annually and Ray’s have always participated in our business group round table with allows students the opportunity to ask questions concerning employment in their business.
Now when we are planning our annual events, Todd is one of the first ones to answer to tell us they will participate.
Todd has worked closely with our Workforce Solutions Department which does job placement. Ray’s willingness to hire a diverse work force has opened the door for many individuals. As we all know employment gives people purpose, self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment and pride. Ray’s has the same philosophy as OCCK, they both feel people should have the opportunity to pursue careers of their choice, participate in the workforce and engage actively in the economic workplace.
We truly appreciate Todd and Ray’s Apple Market for making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

First Impressions of Beloit
All communities have difficulties viewing their surrounding as others – customers, visitors, potential residents, and potential businesses – see them. Our views are skewed by over-familiarization, a lack of differing perspectives, expectations, and a reluctance to be completely honest with our neighbors when dealing with difficult issues, such as the appearance of buildings, customer service, and the maintenance of public facilities.
Recently a volunteer team from another community of similar size made a visit to Beloit to report their “First Impressions” of the community. The team acted as “secret shoppers” for the day to discover what they could about Beloit. They followed a set procedure established through the “First Impressions” program and documented their results.
These results will be shared at a public meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7:00pm at the City of Beloit Municipal Building – 119 North Hersey. Following the presentation, two or three project areas will be identified and time will be allowed for discussion and initial planning. Everyone is encouraged to attend to learn how a visitor sees our community.
“First Impressions” is a program developed by K-State Research and Extension through the Community Vitality program. The focus of the program is to help communities learn about existing strengths and weaknesses through the eyes of visitor. The results from a “First Impressions” visit can serve as the basis for community action and as a way to document changes in a community over time.
For further information about the meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7:00pm , contact Heather Hartman at 785.738.3000 or hhartman@beloitks.org.
