Medicare Basics Workshop
The Beloit Senior Center will be the site of a “Medicare Basics” workshop on Monday, August 14th, beginning at 6:00 PM. The event is sponsored by the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, as well as the Mitchell County Council on Aging and the Beloit Senior Center. The program will highlight the steps people recently (or soon to be) turning 65 will need to follow in signing up for Medicare. It will also benefit anyone who has any questions concerning Medicare, Medicare Supplement programs, or the Medicare Part D Drug plans which will be available in the upcoming annual enrollment sign-up period scheduled for October 15 through December 7. The program is open to anyone regardless of age, but will especially be beneficial to those about to enter the Medicare program, Senior Citizens currently on Medicare, or any caregiver for an individual faced with Medicare issues. There is no cost for the workshop, and advanced enrollment is not necessary. The 6:00 PM starting time will allow those currently working to still attend the meeting, which typically ends between 7:30 and 8:00 PM.
The workshop will be conducted by staff members from NC-FHAAA who specialize in Medicare issues for the Manhattan-based Area Agency on Aging, with added support from John Highland, Beloit’s SHICK volunteer. SHICK stands for Senior Health Insurance Councilor for Kansans. These volunteers help local residents with their Medicare issues throughout the year, whether it is involved in enrolling issues, periodic Medicare questions, or the Medicare Part D enrollment. In addition to the presentation on Medicare by the FHAAA staff, there will be considerable time allotted for questions for any of the highly qualified personnel in attendance. The Flint Hills staff members involved in Medicare issues undergo intense training for that position as they strive to help Kansas Seniors arrive at Medicare decisions that are best for that individual. They work hard to help guide Kansas Seniors in their Medicare options, and are very thorough in presenting an appropriate explanation that is easily understood.
Participation is open to anyone in Mitchell County or any of the surrounding counties. For further information, please call the Beloit Senior Center at 785-738-5802, Jay Rowh, Mitchell County Silver Haired Legislator, at 785-738-2310 or 785-738-0241, or NC-FHAAA at 800-432-2703. You are all invited to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to increase your knowledge of the federal Medicare program, and make it work for YOU.

First Impressions of Beloit
All communities have difficulties viewing their surrounding as others – customers, visitors, potential residents, and potential businesses – see them. Our views are skewed by over-familiarization, a lack of differing perspectives, expectations, and a reluctance to be completely honest with our neighbors when dealing with difficult issues, such as the appearance of buildings, customer service, and the maintenance of public facilities.
Recently a volunteer team from another community of similar size made a visit to Your Town to report their “First Impressions” of the community. The team acted as “secret shoppers” for the day to discover what they could about Your Town. They followed a set procedure established through the “First Impressions” program and documented their results.
These results will be shared at a public meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7:00pm at the City of Beloit Municipal Building – 119 North Hersey. Following the presentation, two or three project areas will be identified and time will be allowed for discussion and initial planning. Everyone is encouraged to attend to learn how a visitor sees your community.
“First Impressions” is a program developed by K-State Research and Extension through the Community Vitality program. The focus of the program is to help communities learn about existing strengths and weaknesses through the eyes of visitor. The results from a “First Impressions” visit can serve as the basis for community action and as a way to document changes in a community over time.
For further information about the meeting on Thursday, August 10th at 7:00pm , contact Heather Hartman at 785.738.3000 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
