American Cancer Society Relay For Life Kicks Off with Movie Event

Join Relay for Life of Mitchell, Osborne and Jewell Counties (RFL) in celebrating another year with a Movie Event to launch the Relay for Life season. RFL invites all to attend the special showing of 50/50 at Solomon Valley Cinema in Beloit at 2:00 p.m. on April 29.

Cancer survivors and one caretaker can attend the movie for free. Please wear your purple shirt and RSVP to Bev Wiese at 785-373-6652 by April 15.

Individuals who have joined or formed a Team for RFL of Mitchell, Osborne and Jewell Counties online at by April 15 can attend for free. Community members are encouraged to join in on the fun by purchasing a $5.00 ticket at the door.

Actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen team up to beat the odds in a film that Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calls “achingly hilarious and heartfelt.” Diagnosed with spinal cancer, 27-year-old Adam (Gordon-Levitt) navigates the road to recovery with the sometimes overbearing support of his crude best friend (Rogen), his smothering mother (Anjelica Huston) and an inexperienced therapist (Anna Kendrick). Inspired by a true story, 50/50 is an honest yet hysterically funny account of a young man’s journey towards healing.

A special thank you to our sponsors for making the movie event possible: Farmway Co-op, S&S Drug, Cunningham Telephone & Cable, H&R Block, Fouts Insurance and Solomon Valley Cinema.

Donations are welcome. Money raised will fight cancer by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.  All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, picnic, dance, play games and take turns circling around a track “relay” style to raise funds and fight cancer.  The event opens as cancer survivors lead the way around the track and are honored with the Survivor Lap.  As the sun begins to set, the warm glow of hundreds of luminaria light the field in an emotional silent ceremony. Each bag lit is in honor of a loved one who won the fight against cancer or in remembrance of a special someone who lost their battle. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope in that those lost to cancer will not be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.

Started in 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who circled around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000.  This year, Relay For Life has grown to more than 5,200 communities and more than 25 countries worldwide.

The RFL of Mitchell, Osborne, and Jewell Counties event takes place Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Chautauqua Park in Beloit from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. To find out more information visit
