KANSAS SILVER HAIRED LEGISLATORS HOLD ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

The Kansas Silver Haired Legislators held their 2015 organizational meeting on Tuesday, May 12 in Topeka. The meeting is for election of officers of the general SHL body for the next two years, as well as the election of officers for the Executive Board for the same period of time. The Executive Board is made up of the chair representatives from each of the eleven Planning and Service Areas (PSA’s) across Kansas, which coincides with the regions of the Area Agencies on Aging in the state. The newly elected officers of the general body also serve on the Executive Board, as well as the treasurer.

The newly elected officers of the general body of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature include:

SPEAKER: Don Woodard (re-elected), Shawnee County (Auburn), PSA 4
SPEAKER PRO TEM: Jane Gingles, Clay County (Clay Center), PSA 8
FLOOR LEADER: Carl Williams, Sedgwick County (Wichita), PSA 2

The newly elected officers of the Executive Board include:

PRESIDENT: Jay Rowh, Mitchell County (Beloit), PSA 8
VICE-PRESIDENT: Thomas Gordon, Wyandotte County (Kansas City, Ks), PSA 1
SECRETARY: Jim Snyder, Shawnee County (Topeka), PSA 4
TREASURER: Ella Rundle, Barber County (Medicine Lodge), PSA 6

The Silver Haired Legislature was created by an Act of Congress in 1969, and was designed to identify issues important to older Kansas adults 60+, and to educate the Kansas Legislature about those issues. The Mission of the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature is to: Educate the citizenry about the needs of the elderly and of the legislative process; Communicate and serve as liaison for our constituents and State Legislators; and Participate and be involved as an advocate for senior citizen issues.

Each PSA meets in the spring to discuss the various issues that are important to that region. In July, the Executive Board will convene to bring all these issues together, and reduce them to the four or five deemed most important, which will then be presented to the entire SHL body at their annual October meeting in Topeka.
