Schoens purchase Harrison Funeral Home

Sylvia and Barry Schoen announce that they have purchased the Harrison Funeral Home located on North Hersey Avenue in Beloit. The Schoens purchased the business from Jim Gabelmann, of Lincoln, Kansas. Sylvia has leased and managed the business for the last few years.

The funeral home will have a new name, Schoen Funeral Home and Monuments.
Sylvia’s husband, Barry has been involved in the business also, and will become more visible in the future, making it a family operation. They look to serve the community for years to come.

The Schoen’s are on call 24 hours a day. They do not use an answering service, but can be reached 24 hours a day. The funeral home has a new website http://www.schoenfhm.com and e-mail address, schoenfhm@g-mail.com. Sylvia said, “We feel that a personal touch is important in the time of need and we provide services for people of all faiths.”

Barry does all the monument work. The Schoen’s do monument sales and repair work, such as restoring stones in cemeteries that have been damaged over the years. Repairs are needed because in the past monuments were not made out of material that lasts, the Schoens said, such as the ones do now.

Sylvia serves on the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce Board and is a member of the Beloit Rotary Club. Barry is a member of the Beloit Volunteer Fire Department.

Sylvia obtained her license through Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, Colorado.
She grew up in Beloit and graduated from Beloit High School in 2010, residing in the area all her life. Sylvia’s parents are Jim and Tresa Kelly who also live in Beloit. Barry is a native of the Downs/Cawker City area. His parents are Bruce and Debbie Schoen of Downs. The Schoens have four children, Kimberly, 8; LeeAllie, 7; Peyton, 5; and Waylynn, 3 months old.

Currently the Schoens are making changes to the funeral home located at 302 North Hersey Avenue in Beloit and are adding a new sign. A new roof has been installed; gutters and facia, and the building will be painted soon along with new windows. There is also a lot of work being done throughout the inside.

The funeral service dates back to 1870 when J.H. Roberts founded the first funeral establishment in this area. From Beloit’s beginning there has been an “Undertaking Parlor”, as funeral homes were known in the late 19th century and early 20th century, to serve this growing community.
Fred Raleigh came to Beloit in 1927 and entered into a partnership with V.E. Daniels in a furniture store and funeral home at the corner of Mill and Main Streets. They operated the funeral business out of the furniture store until 1929.

A residential home at 302 N. Hersey was then purchased and renovated. In December of 1929, an open house was held with Raleigh and Bracken as funeral directors. In January of 1954, Harry and Lee Harrison bought the newly remodeled and enlarged structure at the same location. It was in May of 1983 that the Kansas Funeral Directors Association then presented the Harrison funeral Home with a One Hundred Years of Continuous Service since 1870 certificate. In 1985, Harry and Lee’s son Rick came back to Beloit to work with them in the family business.

For the past 144 years, people in the funeral directing professional have been serving members of all religions in the Solomon Valley area, and they have been proud to be a part of this heritage.

To Serve-to Assist-to Comfort are the fundamentals of their activity year-in and year-out.
It’s not so much the Beauty of the place
It’s not so much the size of the firm
It’s not so much a matter of facilities
What really counts is not material things
But service to our fellowmen.

Ribbon Cutting

A Ribbon Cutting will take place on Tuesday, January 6th for Schoen Funeral Home (formerly Harrison Funeral Home), 302 N Hersey, at 10am.

Becker Autos & Trailers Expands to Close Out 2014

Becker Autos & Trailers in Downs and Beloit has definitely made some changes to close out 2014. They hired their first full time vehicle mechanic, Charlie Harmon of Beloit. With several years of mechanic experience under his belt, Charlie joined the Becker Autos & Trailers team in Beloit in November. Charlie has been able to help maintain the current inventory and hopes soon to be able to service customers’ repair and maintenance needs.
Becker Autos & Trailers has added a new 60×80 metal building to the Beloit lot for full time trailer repair facility. Doug DeVore, full time employee and jack of all trades, will manage the shop. DeVore hopes to meet all your trailer needs. Welding and aluminum welding, floor installation, banding, frame straightening and structural repair, trailer wiring, flatbed and gooseneck ball installation for trucks are just a few of the things the shop will specialize in.
Becker Autos & Trailers in Downs and Beloit now offers financing on vehicles! Low and competitive rates for good credit and options for bad or no credit. Introductory good credit rates start as low as 1.99% through 2014. They also have financing options available for several of their new trailers brands.
“We are so excited to have all these new options to better serve our customers. We think 2015 will be a great year for Becker Autos & Trailers, and really appreciate the local support we continue to receive!” said Lydia Housh, Manager of Becker Autos & Trailers in Beloit.
