Free Movie at the Cinema

Join the fun and festivities at Solomon Valley Cinema. H&R Block Beloit is sponsoring free movies at the Cinema on Saturday, December 14 & 21.

According to Amanda Schwerman, Cinema Manager, “We want to show appreciation to people in the area for their support throughout the year. Their patronage is what makes it possible to keep the doors open, the prices down, and the movie selection good.”

This year, the Cinema is partnering with H&R Block Beloit to bring Home Alone and Unaccompanied Minors to the theatre. “We chose to sponsor this program because of our commitment to community,” said Robert Davis, H&R Block Beloit Owner. “We feel fortunate to have such a nice facility in the area and to get new releases in the theatre so quickly.”

There is no admission charge for the movies. Concessions will be for sale. The movie is open to people of all ages. There will be a drawing at each showing for punch cards with 10 free adult admissions and 10 free child admissions.

Christmas is a time to enjoy family and friends. Join your friends at Solomon Valley Cinema on December 14 for Unaccompanied Minors and December 21 for Home Alone. Both showings will be at 2:00pm.

NCK Tech Achieves a Third National Ranking in 2013

North Central Kansas Technical College (NCK Tech), with campuses in Beloit and Hays, was recently ranked the #7 two-year college in the United States by Create a Career, a leading resource for career information. This is the third national ranking for NCK Tech in 2013, following the #6 ranking by the and the #7 ranking by announced earlier this year, and the second year of national recognition — the college earned a #5 ranking by CNN Money and was included in the the Aspen Institute’s “Top 10% in the U.S.” in 2012.

Create a Career selected the award-winning two year colleges based on an evaluation of several studies and ratings of two year institutions located throughout the nation. The company considered factors such as student retention rates, percentage of students who graduate or transfer to another school within three years, student-to-faculty ratios, student support, the types of programs provided and the schools’ reputation. In the “The 25 Best Community Colleges in the United States” article, NCK Tech’s graduate placement rate, which averages over 90 percent every year, and the above-average salaries of graduates were identified as key factors in the national ranking. In addition, NCK Tech’s Kansas Institute of Underground Technology, which features a state-of-the-art up-to-date curriculum and hands-on practical training opportunities, was cited as an example of innovative collaboration with the Kansas Department of Commerce and local businesses.

The Create a Career website provides important information about specific occupations, including a realistic career overview, education, certification and license requirements, employment growth outlook, salary information and major employers. The full listing of selected institutions, as well as further information on the Create a Career organization, may be found at:

NCK Tech Nursing Program Achieves National Ranking

The North Central Kansas Technical College (NCK Tech) Department of Nursing, Beloit campus, has achieved two number one rankings from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The Council ranked the Practical Nursing (PN) program 1st of the 21 similar nursing programs across Kansas and 1st of 1,045 similar programs in the U.S. and U.S. territories. The rankings are based on the percentage of graduates passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) during the 2013 testing year, compared to other programs with at least ten graduates who took the examination during the same reporting period. The PN program also achieved a 100% first time pass rate for the year. This percentage is based on the number of graduates who took the NCLEX for the first time and passed the examination. The NCK Tech pass rate exceeded both state and national averages.

The NCK Tech PN program recently completed a Kansas State Board of Nursing (KBSN) accreditation visit and was recommended for a 5 year accreditation, which is the highest possible accreditation status for a PN program.

The NCLEX examination measures the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse and is the capstone of nursing program studies. The NCK Tech PN program is a one year certificate program. Patti Scott is the Nursing program Department Chair of the NCK Tech Beloit campus. Additional Nursing faculty on the Beloit campus are: Annette Saint, Nicki Kasl, Christine Budke, Rebecca Pellant, and Erica Knox.
